Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025 – Access to Free Period Products in Aberdeen

Posted 28th May 2025 · Blog

CFINE has played a key role in ensuring there is access to free period products around Aberdeen City. After participating in a successful pilot in 2017 CFINE has been distributing free period products to organisations across the city.

People can now access free period products from over 200 venues across Aberdeen. Including schools, museums, sports venues and community centres.

Those facing period poverty can often feel ashamed or embarrassed. This can have a knock-on effect on people’s mental wellbeing and their ability to participate at work or school. In 2018 a Young Scot survey found that 64% of girls surveyed had missed a part day or full day of school because of their period. Here at CFINE we want to fight the stigma around periods and fight period poverty.

To celebrate Menstrual Hygiene Day, let’s look at the different products available for free across the city.

What products can I access for free?

CFINE supplies venues across the city with a selection of single use and reusable period products. Full packets of single use pads and tampons are available for those who need them. Reusable products are also available including menstrual cups, reusable pads and period underwear.

Reusable period products can help to decrease waste and the levels of carbon entering the environment. Over the last five years CFINE has distributed 8,120 menstrual cups around the city. This is thanks to funding from Aberdeen City Council and our supplier Unicorn Cup. You can find out more about the range of free reusable period products below.

Reusable Menstrual Cups

Would you like to make the switch to reusable period products but are worried about the initial cost? Reusable menstrual cups are available for free around Aberdeen thanks to our partnership with Unicorn Cup.

Unicorn Cups are made of 100% medical grade silicone and can help to reduce waste as they have a lifespan of 5-10 years. Saving hundreds of single use products going to landfill across the same time frame.

You can learn more about Unicorn Cups, how to use them and safely clean them here.

Reusable Period Pads and Underwear

Reusable period underwear can also be collected for free from venues across the city. Like menstrual cups, reusable period underwear helps reduce the amount of waste generated from single use products. Simply find the correct size for you and wash them correctly between uses.
