CFINE established the HOPE Programme in 2021 with the aim of supporting prisoners being released from HMP Grampian. In partnership with the prison and key organisations, a pre-release programme helps individuals prepare for release with guidance on topics such as benefits, recovery support and employability. Post-release, participants are invited to attend CFINE to join sessions that take place across the week. The workshops continue themes from the pre-release programme, offer a safe space to talk about challenges being faced, and include activities that promote wellbeing.
HOPE participants from across the post-release programmes were given the opportunity to leave a lasting mark at CFINE through the creation of a mural. Promoting sustainable lifestyles and CFINE’s services, the mural set out to brighten up the wall alongside the building. Funding for materials was kindly provided by the Gateway Exchange Fund which ‘empowers people to move on with their lives and fulfil their potential’. After the required permissions were obtained from the council, work took place whenever a break in the Scottish weather allowed it.

HOPE beneficiaries took a leading role in all stages of the process; from initial design to wall preparation to the actual painting. The participants were expertly supported by Kara Shepherd, an artist with a keen interest in promoting wellbeing through creative endeavour. For many of the contributors, painting publicly on such a scale, took them out of their comfort zones. CFINE employees, volunteers and passers-by offered supportive comments and encouragement and offered up their own ideas for additions. As the wall neared completion, volunteers and staff were invited to add their handprint to a bush in a prominent section of the mural.
There was a clear sense of pride in the finished product from everyone that was involved and HOPE members have been keen to highlight their contributions to family and friends. The mural will serve as a lasting reminder to them of what can be achieved through strong collaboration and creative thinking. The wider CFINE community is delighted to host a colourful piece of art with a rich backstory.
