This is a guest blog from Mind Store, a close charity partner of CFINE. Mind Store is an Aberdeen based charity that aims to improve mental health and wellbeing, and builds resilience, through a range of support. Including through CBT, counselling, group therapy, listening service and participation in nutrition, cookery and gardening.
The blog post below discusses some of the concerns you may have before seeing a counsellor or therapist.

Do you feel apprehensive about Therapy/Counselling?
Many people want to talk to someone about their problems, but sometimes myths or misconceptions prevent them from seeing a counsellor or therapist.
Below are a few of the worries that put people off talking to a therapist, along with some answers that will hopefully put your mind at ease.
Is it anonymous? Will you keep what I tell you private?
Yes. We value your privacy and will never disclose details of your life to others. However, if there is cause to believe that there is an intent to harm yourself or others, your therapist would be required to disclose this information to an appropriate person.
How much does it cost?
Counselling/Therapy at Mind Store is currently free. However, we rely on donations to provide our services.
Is there a waiting list?
Yes. When you contact us with an expression of interest for counselling or therapy, we will take your details and let you know when a space is available. You can join our community classes without the need for a waiting list.
I’m not sure I want to commit yet.
That’s ok. There’s no pressure and we won’t force you to attend. We hope that you feel safe and encouraged here and that you look forward to your appointments. We ask for 24-hour notice if you need to cancel a booked counselling session.
Is it easy to access appointments?
Yes. We have disabled toilets, lift etc.
Do you do online sessions?
We can arrange on-line sessions via Teams
What if I don’t like my counsellor?
It is really important to develop a therapeutic relationship with your Therapist/Counsellor. On occasion, for a variety of reasons, this might not be possible, and we are happy to discuss alternative options.
I feel ashamed that I need help and can’t fix my problems on my own.
Talking therapies are a great way to access your own inner strength. Asking for help isn’t about being weak or incapable. We all need help at times.
I don’t believe counselling/therapy will help me.
Talking Therapies are just one activity you can try for your mental health wellbeing. Everyone is unique. Talking things through with another person might help you find other techniques that will benefit your specific situation.

The above diagram shows the “Cycle of Change” defined by Prochaska and DiClemente. There are multiple stages a person might go through when making adjustments in their life.
Which stage do you think you’re at?...
