Preparations underway for ‘World Piece’

Posted 22nd May 2024 · News

CFINE, in collaboration with Aberdeen Asylum and Refugee Care (AARC), have been preparing to hold an event – ‘World Piece’ - in our Community Kitchen as part of Refugee Festival Scotland (14th – 23rd June).

“Refugee Festival Scotland is an arts and community festival which takes place every year in the lead up to World Refugee Day, on 20 June. Each event helps to shine a light on the cultural richness and diversity of our communities. It is a celebration of the food and drink, music and poetry, art, dance, language and ideas that people bring with them when they settle in Scotland.”

This year the festival’s theme is RISE: “Rising is also about being able to rise again after falling, and not giving up on bringing about change, healing and renewal. It means rising above hostile narratives and bringing others with you to realize a more joyful, inclusive society where everyone belongs, finds mutual support, and has a voice.”

The name World Piece is a play on words combining the concepts of 'world peace' and a 'fine piece' - Aberdonian vernacular for a sweet treat or cake.

World Piece will see refugees and asylum seekers living in Aberdeen cook their own recipes at CFINE's Community Kitchen - Cook at the 'Nook. The food will be served to unique cultures from around the city to celebrate our diversity by breaking bread.

We held two sessions, ahead of the event on the 18th of June, which involved cooking from Afghanistan, Kurdistan, Eritrea, and Ethiopia. The kitchen was alive with energy, some of the team hadn’t had a taste of home for a very long time.

"The cooking was great! I really enjoyed learning new techniques and recipes and I am happy that you all liked my cooking" – World Piece Participant
