HOPE participants install new compost bins at Tullos Community Garden

Posted 10th Jun 2024 · Blog

At the start of 2024, the HOPE programme was invited to support the work of the Tullos Community Garden. HOPE participants attend the garden, weather permitting, on a roughly weekly basis as part of the community service work they undertake. In partnership with CFINE’s Community Growing team, a decision was made to replace the compost bays that had fallen into a state of disrepair.

The content of the bins was removed and the frames dismantled. Some of the better pieces of the wood were kept to build a new planter from. In the meantime, new bins were being prepared by prisoners at HMP Grampian. These bins were brought down to Aberdeen with help from Peterhead’s Fruitmart and installed with assistance from individuals on the Warehouse Skills Development Programme.

The new compost bins will be well used (3 for garden waste and 1 as a woodchip store). They will have a positive impact on the outlook for this green space, and the wellbeing and learning opportunities it affords.
